Propylene Oxide is also referred to as 1,2-propylene oxide, methyl ethylene oxide, or P.O. It is a colorless, volatile, and flammable liquid with a characteristic ether-like odor. Its relative molecular weight is 58.08, and its relative density is 0.823 at 25°C. It has a melting point of −112.13°C, a boiling point of 34.23°C, and a refractive index of 1.3664. Its closed-cup flash point is −35°C, and its ignition point is 420°C.
The vapor pressure of propylene oxide increases with temperature, measuring 1.04 × 10⁴ Pa at −20°C, 2.80 × 10⁴ Pa at 0°C, 6.53 × 10⁴ Pa at 20°C, and 7.59 × 10⁴ Pa at 25°C. It is soluble in water, with solubility values of 40.5 g/100 mL at 20°C and 60 g/100 mL at 30°C, and is miscible with most common reagents.
Propylene oxide forms a binary azeotrope with water containing 1% water, with an azeotropic temperature of 39.9°C. It can also form binary azeotropes with various solvents, including dichloromethane, ether, cyclohexane, cyclopentane, and pentene.
