Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) is a linear block copolymer with an (AB)-type structure. In this structure, "A" denotes a high-molecular-weight polymeric polyol, such as polyester or polyether, with a molecular weight ranging from 1,000 to 6,000; this component is known as the "long chain." "B" represents a diol with a straight carbon chain containing 2 to 12 carbon atoms, referred to as the "short chain."

As a thermoplastic elastomer (TPE), TPU is widely used in a variety of industries, including automotive, transportation, aerospace, sporting goods, and medical devices. It is also employed in the manufacture of footwear, magnetic tapes, inks, and adhesive tapes. Other applications include automotive components, cable sheathing, clothing, inflatable toys, water and underwater sports equipment, umbrellas, suitcases, and bags.
